Living in the Present on the Learning of the Past

As we continue in Paul’s letter to the Romans in the 15th Chapter our teacher, Pastor Landis Fisher shows us some significant applications for these texts, which teaches Paul’s position on the Old Testament and how it should be considered by believers in the entire Church age, until the return of Christ Jesus. Listen in as our teacher presents a lesson which he has titled “Living in the Present on the Learning of the Past”

Old Testament Scripture Reading: Jeremiah 6:10 – 19  (KJV)
Jer 6:10  To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the word of the LORD is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it.
Jer 6:11  Therefore I am full of the fury of the LORD; I am weary with holding in: I will pour it out upon the children abroad, and upon the assembly of young men together: for even the husband with the wife shall be taken, the aged with him that is full of days.
Jer 6:12  And their houses shall be turned unto others, with their fields and wives together: for I will stretch out my hand upon the inhabitants of the land, saith the LORD.
Jer 6:13  For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.
Jer 6:14  They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.
Jer 6:15  Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore they shall fall among them that fall: at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down, saith the LORD.
Jer 6:16  Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.
Jer 6:17  Also I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, We will not hearken.
Jer 6:18  Therefore hear, ye nations, and know, O congregation, what is among them.
Jer 6:19  Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto my words, nor to my law, but rejected it.
New Testament Scripture Reading: Romans 15:1 – 7  (NASB)

Rom 15:1  We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.
Rom 15:2  Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.
Rom 15:3  For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.
Rom 15:4  For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
Rom 15:5  Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:
Rom 15:6  That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Rom 15:7  Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.

Transforming Power Statements:

1) Due to the fallen nature, people have always had a tendency to follow the consensus of multitude whether right or wrong; regardless of what God has said, which is always contrary to the ways of man which always cater to the flesh the world and the devil; therefore we who are called and saved must always examine the Word and insist on God’s reasoning about every matter in life.

2) Our increase in understanding derived from our study and fellowship in God’s Word must become the catalyst for our faith, planning, and practice in every area of life as we continue expanding our outreach and inreach within the Church and especially within our families and personal relationships in life.

3) God’s love is displayed as He gives the story of His unfailing love for the sons of Israel in spite of their repeated evil practices, rebellions, and disregards for His Word and even more, His own Son, Jesus the Christ, to whom they shall return in the latter days.
