God’s Purpose for Human Government

As we return to our study through the entire book of Romans, Pastor Landis Fisher wants to explain the biblical view of what God teaches about the purpose of human government with respect to what Christians should understand on this vital topic. Listen today as we enter into Romans 13 on this crucial topic.

Old Testament Scripture Reading: Genesis 9:1 – 6  (KJV)

Gen 9:1  And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.
Gen 9:2  And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered.
Gen 9:3  Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.
Gen 9:4  But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.
Gen 9:5  And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man.
Gen 9:6  Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.

New Testament Scripture Reading: Romans 13:1 – 7  (KJV)

Rom 13:1  Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
Rom 13:2  Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
Rom 13:3  For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
Rom 13:4  For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
Rom 13:5  Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.
Rom 13:6  For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.
Rom 13:7  Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

Transforming Power Statements:

1) Human Government was instituted by God after the flood in the days of Noah and was set up to allow mankind to govern themselves having authority even up to capital punishment whenever appropriate, and has been in  effect every since, and was given this authority for the good of mankind.

2) The Scriptures teach that the law and human government ordained by God for the benefit of those who believe, to promote and sustain peace in general and to be a force against evil in general; and is designed to be therefore, a force against all forms wickedness as a deterrent against the normal decay in the world because of the disease of sin.

3) As we see human government promoting evil and attacking righteousness, let us recognize this as a sign of the times prophesied  in the Scriptures and a reminder for the SAVED TO LOOK UP FOR YOUR REDEMPTION DRAWETH NIGH!
