The Last Atonement

In this 2nd installment in the epistle of First John, Pastor: Landis is teaching about one of the central doctrines of the Christian faith: The doctrine of the atonement. Listen and learn about what Jesus the Messiah has completed for everyone who trusts in Him: The Last Atonement!

Old Testament Scripture Reading: Leviticus 23:23 – 30  (NASB)

Lev 23:23  Again the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

Lev 23:24  “Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘In the seventh month on the first of the month, you shall have a rest, a reminder by blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation.

Lev 23:25  ‘You shall not do any laborious work, but you shall present an offering by fire to the LORD.'”

Lev 23:26  And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

Lev 23:27  “On exactly the tenth day of this seventh month is the day of atonement; it shall be a holy convocation for you, and you shall humble your souls and present an offering by fire to the LORD.

Lev 23:28  “Neither shall you do any work on this same day, for it is a day of atonement, to make atonement on your behalf before the LORD your God.

Lev 23:29  “If there is any person who will not humble himself on this same day, he shall be cut off from his people.

Lev 23:30  “As for any person who does any work on this same day, that person I will destroy from among his people.

New Testament Scripture Reading: 1 John 2:1 – 6  (NASB)
1 John 2:1  My little children, I am writing these things to you that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous;
1 John 2:2  and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.
1 John 2:3  And by this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments.
1 John 2:4  The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him;
1 John 2:5  but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him:
1 John 2:6  the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.
Transforming Power Statements:

#1) The atonement that Jesus Christ has provided to cover the sins of believers in His death, burial and resurrection is complete and is the only acceptable sacrifice to God the Father. No one can be justified {declared not guilty in the sight of God} without it.

 #2) Just as Old Testament saints were taught to look forward to the Holy One of Israel, Who was to come in order to deal with the problems of sins effects on God’s creation and to reconcile all things back to God,   In a similar way, New Testament saints take the Eucharist {Communion} with a view back to the completed atonement that Messiah has already done to fulfill all the types and shadows signified in Old Testament rituals.

#3) True possessors of the applied atonement are those who are capable of knowing by experience that their sins are on the decline and their desire to please God in real time is on the rise and is at the center of their hearts.
