Passing on the Legacy of Faith

As we have come to another Father’s Day celebration in the United States, our teacher, Pastor Landis Fisher has prepared a special message, within the ongoing topical study that has been in progress over the past several installments in his series on “Marriage and Family” which he has titled: “Passing on the Legacy of Faith”

Old Testament Scripture Reading: Psalms 78:1 – 8  (KJV)

Psa 78:1  Maschil of Asaph. Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
Psa 78:2  I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:
Psa 78:3  Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.
Psa 78:4  We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.
Psa 78:5  For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:
Psa 78:6  That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:
Psa 78:7  That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:
Psa 78:8  And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God

New Testament Scripture Reading: 1John 2:13 – 17  (KJV)

1Jn 2:13  I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.
1Jn 2:14  I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
1Jn 2:15  Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
1Jn 2:16  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
1Jn 2:17  And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

Transforming Power Statements:

1) With successive generation, the responsibility of teaching to the next generation the “correct” knowledge of God was originally intended to be spearheaded by “Fathers” even though it is an overall endeavor for the mother as well.

2) Just as it was when the Psalmist penned this 78th Psalms, (along with a myriad of other Biblical writers & examples) there was an obvious lack in this mandate to be performed by the Fathers and the same is the case in our current culture as well.

3) The spiritual aspect of education is mostly even more important than other areas of knowledge because without it, nothing else even matters in the sight of eternity; therefore, the call for the return of the Fathers to give heed to this important portion of this life is called for throughout the entire Bible even more now than ever.
